Isolation and Characterization of Microcystin- Degrading Bacterium

چکیده

The most commonly encountered cyanobacterial toxins in freshwater are microcystins. Microcystins are extremely stable and resistant to chemical hydrolysis or oxidation and can cause illness or death in animals and humans. In this study, a total of 15 bacterial strains were isolated and screened for microcystin degradative activity from Kaen Nakhon Lake, Khon Kaen Province, Thailand. Among these isolates, KKU-12 demonstrated degradative activity. It is an aerobic, gram-negative, slow-growing bacterium and formed pale yellow-colored colonies. It was established that the optimal degradative activity of NV-3 with cell concentration of 1.5x10 CFU/ml at 30C was 25 μg/ml microcystins within 1 day.
